Thoughts On The Next Xbox

With this current generation of hardware getting close to end-of-life, within 2-4 years I'd say, I thought it would be a good time to look ahead and do some wishing. The original Xbox was clearing a stepping stone to the Xbox 360, and while I don't believe a third console to be such a dramatic change there is lots of improvements I would love to see come forth.

I would like to see:

Hardware Upgrades

- Graphics
- RAM
- Processing power
- Manditory, user replaceable HDD
- A 'Legacy' DVD drive (more on the in a bit)
- Clickable buttons (power, open tray). I hate the touch sensitive ones on the new slim 360's
- I love the 360 controller. But how about adding a slide-out keyboard or 2-3" touch screen.

Software

- Online Status: So I can let people know I'm busy, or I'm looking to play Halo, or that my kids are watching Netflix not me.
- Friend List Organization: Let me filter my friends list into groups: SSG, IRL, GGN, family, work, etc... Also included is a higher cap, say 200. 500?
- Notification Filtering: With that many friends I don't need to see notifications from all of them. Let me choose by group (or individual) if/when I receive notifications from them.
- Notification Flexibility: Let me choose notification sounds, position, color, for each person/group. Also how about smartphone apps? Let someone ping my smartphone to let me know they want to play a game with me if I'm away from my console.
- Chat: Upgrade cha audio quality. Also add universal filtering (team/party) so I never have to hear timmies again, no matter what game I'm playing.
- Party Up: Show me, via my friends list, whom is partied together. So if I have 10 friends playing CoD show me that they are partied up 6 and 4, or 8 and 8 even showing the full party including people not on my friends list. A la Halo Reach.
- Games: No more discs. Screw DVD. Screw Blu-Ray. I want day-and-date on-demand online delivery. Imagine this: You can buy games directly from your console via your broadband, or if you'd rather head into Best Buy/GameStop and buy games there via a kiosk that transfers to your own USB device, which is then transferred to your console at home. (Credit: CodeMonkey) Make a 'legacy' Blu-Ray/DVD drive that is an external excessory to the console for old 360 games and movies. New games can also come out on discs for physical media lovers/collectors but digital and physical copies launch at the same time.
- Kill The Cable Box: Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, YouTube, HBO. Give me these services and more, so I don't need my cable. Also these should all be "free" or included with the third tier XBL (see below)
- XBL Tiers: Keep Silver and Gold, add Platinum.
- Silver Tier: ($0/year) Gets you matchmaking, but more advanced features are restricted and premium services are a la cart.
- Gold Tier: ($50/year) Gets You matchmaking and all the advanced features but premium services are a la cart.
- Platinum Tier: ($150/year) Gets you matchmaking, advanced features, and all premium services.
- Day Pass: Let users pay for a day/week pass to Gold or Platinum.
- Premium Services: Netflix, Hulu, HBO, CoD: Elite, ESPN, EA Sports Season Pass, Pandora, etc.
- Social Media: Better, full, integration with social media. Facebook, twitter, G+ and any new hotness that comes out. Let me customize which services I used and customize which and how I receive notifications from these services.
- Web Browser: Let me get on the web. I should be able to "click" on URL's within messages and bio's.
- User Ratings: Give me a rating system that works. Currently everyone on XBL has 5 stars, the system is broken and never worked. Make feedback relevant. Let douchebags play with douchebags.

Yes, The MacBook Air Is Practical.

11" MacBook Air

I finally did it. After lusting after the original MacBook Air (MBA) for years, I went ahead and purchased a (refurbished) Air. I bought the 11' model with the 1.4Ghz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB SSD drive.

Since buying the Air, or even just talking about buying it, the people I've talked to about uniformly agree on two things: the first being that they all think the Air is super sexy and most would like one. The second think they ask me is why I "need" the Air. The want to know how it will suit me better than the 13' MacBook Pro and iPad 2 I had at the time.

Friends would tell me all the reasons why the Air was such a terrible decision and that I should just stick with my Pro. "Think of everything that you will lose going to an Air! Smaller screen, no DVD drive, less storage, less ports, less, less, less... But what people don't understand is that almost all of these "killer features" of the non-Air laptops are typically never used.

1.4gHz 4GB RAM 64GB SSD

I've been using the MBA for almost a month now, not once have I regretted the decision. I've used it to surf the web, made a video with iMovie, used iTunes, and even used Photoshop. Not once did I feel "compromised", I didn't need a bigger screen, nor a DVD drive, or even 4+ USB ports to get any of that done. I'm not pressed for storage either; the limited 64GB SSD has about 30GB free currently and since it's my laptop (and second computer) I don't need to store all my media on it.

2011 MacBook Air vs 2008 MacBook

Most people could easily get away with the Air being their only computer; of all the computers I get in to work on most people's media collection (music, picture, documents) is less that 5GB. Now that's just for your 'average' consumer, I know there are people out there with enormous media collections; my personal media collection is over 30GB. But even then the 128GB SSD would be more than enough to hold a large media collection.

2011 MacBook Air vs 2011 iPad 2

The Air is fast, light-weight, with a great battery life. I can't recommend enough to someone, either as there only computer or as a great companion computer. Unless you really "need" a DVD drive (the Air can install software from any computer DVD drive on the same network PC or Mac) or lots of processing power the Air is hands done the best computer I've ever owned.

Reviewing The iPad 2

I only have 48 hours of iPad 2 use under my belt I can tell you that I couldn't (or at least wouldn't want to) go back to the 2010 iPad. Nothing was particularly wrong with the first iPad, the have the same firmware versions, and have all the same feature save some new camera and goodies on the iPad 2.

So why do I boldly claim that I could never go back to the "old" iPad? It's just the feeling you get when you use it. I suspect that users that had never had an iPad 1 will not see what the fuss is about. They will love there new iPad all the same, but they just won't know how good they have it.

Speed, it's all about the speed.

Everything is faster on the iPad 2: switching apps, loading apps, pulling up the onscreen keyboard, web pages just blaze to life. the Internet seems faster on this device than on any other in my house, and my personal computers are not slouches. With a 2009 MacBook Pro and a 2008 iMac I have no grips with those machines in my day-to-day use, but surfing the web on an iPad has always been more personal, more comfortable. Where a desktop or laptop seem to more of a utility the iPad was designed to be intimate, it's just you and a gorgeous (responsive) 10" touch screen. It sits in your lap and is just a different experience than a personal computer... Which seems ironic because the iPad is much more personal than a PC could ever be. In fact you could even look at the "personal-ness" of the iPad to be a drawback in some cases. Like a family household that has one iPad, with multiple people using it there is no easy way to have multiple accounts on the device. So be prepared to share your Angry Birds game with the rest of your house, you can't login to a saved game all your own.

So what makes the iPad so personal, so intimate? Like most Apple products it's the combination of form+function. The new tapered edges just make it feel slimmer and easier to hold, the 10" form factor is a great size. Everything from text on webpages to games and videos are at a great size to personally view the content. While the iPad is very dense, at only 1.33lbs it is the most portable computer you'll ever carry. Whether I am sitting it on my lap or holding it portrait to read a book, it never feels cumbersome. The iPad never gets hot, hell it never gets warm! Compare that to my MacBook Pro that could cook an egg with how hot it gets, and weighs 4.5lbs, the iPad is a welcome change on my lap.

The iPad, much like the iPhone and iPod Touch, is never really "off" so the iPad has this instant on feature that is even faster than a laptop. Combine this with the fact that you never have to turn it off, like you might your laptop, the iPad is always ready to go when you are. Games and apps save you place or "state" so you can easily and quickly get back to work, or play.

Whether you use the iPad for work or play the main feature where the iPad out shines you laptop is the amazing battery life. All computer companies make ridiculous claims about their products battery life it seems, and even though Apple seems to be more realistic in their claims they have always been a few hours short in my real-world testing. But the iPad, both iPads, have far exceeded Apple battery claims no matter what I'm doing. Apple states that the iPad will get 10 hours on WiFi and 9 hours on 3G; I can tell you that with the 9 months I had my first iPad with 3G I was getting between 14-16 hours on a battery, with 80% of that time being on 3G. That's 50% more battery life than Apple claimed I should get. My short 48 hours with the iPad 2 seems to prove that I can still expect the same great performance with this years model, irregardless of the fact that it is 33% thinner than it's predecessor with a faster processor and more RAM to boot.

How about those Smart Covers? Being the fanboy I am, I couldn't help but pick up Apple's newest toy and try it out. And I gotta say this is where Apple's blend of form+function is killing (or going to kill...) it's competitors. Apple made a case for the first iPad as well, that I thoroughly enjoyed and couldn't image using that iPad without it, but this year the Smart Covers really takes the icing on the cake. I used the Apple Case the entire 9 months I had the iPad 1, and again, 24 hours with the smart covers; I'm hooked and not looking back. Like everything Apple does there is this easy-of-use factor with the Smart Covers. The Smart Cover auto-aligns "magically" or magnetically with the left side of the iPad with a strong enough bond to support the weight of the iPad, even with some vigorous shaking on my part. Apple was also smart enough to stick a few more magnets on the right-side to hold the Smart Cover closed against the iPad as to not be flapping about when carrying the iPad. But the magnets on the Smart Cover do double duty; they also a hold the Smart Cover in various positions within itself. There is a triangular position that holds the iPad in a 30° angle for typing in landscape or you can flip it up to about a 80° angle for viewing video/pictures/whatever. You can also fold the entire Smart Cover around the back of the iPad and the magnets will do their work (on the right side again) and hold the cover for you. Now the magnetism around the back is only about 20% of what it is around the front (due to the magnets being on the front I suspect) but they still hold, so if you're vertically holding the iPad reading a book or webpage you don't have the annoyance of the cover flapping around on you.

The iPad 2 also added cameras in the mix, a front center VGA and back right "HD" camera. Which added the iPad into the FaceTime capable category of Apple hardware. While the camera are not near the quality level of the iPhone 4 (they are suspected to be the same as the iPod Touch v4) they will be "good enough" for what you need them for, FaceTime. FaceTime hasn't made a huge splash (or video calling in general) but I can see it taking off with the iPad 2. With the huge 10" display I can see my parents being much more excited about FaceTime-ing to say "hi" and to see their soon-to-be-born grandchild. I don't see them doing that with an iPhone, or even their Mac, it's that personal touch that the iPad brings. What about long distance couples, military families, friends, hell I've even used FaceTime for tech support before! Alongside FaceTime, Apple brought two other desktop apps to the iPad with iMovie and Photo Booth. iMovie received a upgrade from it's iPhone counterpart but it is still severely lacking in options to truly make a quality home video. But Photo Booth shines even better on the iPad than it even did on the Mac. It does this by adding touch to the experience, that "swirly" effect can be manipulated with your finger to anywhere on the screen. While this may only give an adult mild amusement, think about a child and their friends or how about a couple just starting to date (or about to...), Photo Booth provides a level of quick and easy fun that anyone can enjoy and share.

Oh GarageBand. I could (and might) write a whole article devoted to this amazing, ground breaking app. GarageBand is a $5 dollar app that should be $500 given it's capabilities, easy-of-use, and potential. Unlike iMovie, GarageBand for iPad is 95% of what GarageBand for Mac is; so I have no doubt we will see many artists using their iPad for their next album, see Ari Hest as a prime example. This is an app that truly is capable of providing fun for the most musically illiterate person, like myself, or an artist looking to make their next album.

Now that I've gushed for eight paragraphs about how awesome the iPad is, on true fanboy fashion, could I have anything negative to say about it? I could be truly cliché at this point and complain about the "lack" of Adobe Flash support but honestly I could give a shit about Flash; on ANY device I own. Since owning the first iPhone in 2007 I've have never missed Flash support, I even run ClickToFlash on all my computers browsers so Flash won't ever run unless I implicitly allow it and want it; which is very rare save YouTube. Or I could bitch about the "Walled Garden" that Apple has created by curating it's App Store and vetting each app that goes in it. But with the thousands and thousands of app available to me on my iPhone and iPad I've yet to look for something and come away empty handed, let alone find something on Android that I was unable to find or replicate. At the same I 100% support jail breaking of iOS devices, in fact I've jail broken all four of my iPhones (and my wife's two), and my first iPad. I fully plan on jail breaking the iPad 2 ASAP as there are quiet a few apps that I miss dearly when I am not jail broke. In fact I bought the WiFi only iPad specifically because I plan to jailbreak it and tether it to my iPhone via MyWi and their fantastic new OnDemand feature. But a jail breaking segment will be for another post...

Now seriously, what are some draw backs to the iPad 2:

Cameras - I realize that Apple does have to cut cost and cut features (for future products) but why not add better camera to the higher SKU's? Or maybe just the 3G models get better cameras. When the iPhone 4 came out I sold my point-and-shoot and I exclusively use my iPhone 4 for all my pictures and HD video, and that is saying something considering I have a baby on the way and will be taking more pictures than anyone will want to see. But Apple isn't one to have a diverse product line, they have three desktops and three laptops, and the new always ushers out the old. I have no doubt that with the iPad 3 we will see better cameras but it would have been nice to have them now, or at least the option.

Price - Now I know that Apple and the iPad kill all of their competitors on price, and that $499 price point is amazing for a 16GB tablet that can do so much, and perfectly fine for about 40% of the consumers buying iPads. But in typical Apple fashion they gauge the shit out of you for minor upgrades... Like I said $499 is a fantastic price but then it jumps $100 dollars just to add 16GB of memory! That's it, no added features or hardware components. NewEgg.com has 16GB flash drives for $21, hell even BestBuy carries them as cheap as $35 dollars. Then there is Apple charging $100. Now I realize that a flash drive is not the same as the memory that Apple puts into an iDevice but with Apple buying hundreds of millions of flash chips, I'll bet they get a deal that's cheaper than $100 bucks a pop. The same goes for the 3G radio, that will add $130 dollars to the price of an iPad. Again I'm not sure what the price of a 3G radio goes for but when you buy them in mass quantities $130 dollars does seem excessive. We also don't know what, if any, deal Apple has worked out with the carrier. The carriers may very well get a cut of every 3G iPad sold, which would come out of that $130 up charge. So just jumping up to the 32GB with 3G adds to $230 dollars to your bill when really Apple could probably do it for $75 and still make money. But I can see why Apple wouldn't want to price their models only $25 or $50 dollars apart, the perception of "value" is lost. By tiering at $100 increments you build value and keep it simple. But it's still frustrating being in the tech industry and knowing how much these parts cost and getting screwed.

File Management - the iOS platform is closed one and Apple doesn't let end users nor developers access the file system to save/transfer/delete files at will. With iOS 4.0 Apple added a feature to add files to certain apps via iTunes and once on the device you can "pass" files between one app and another but the app has to "import" the file and it's just this big mess. Apple needs to just buy DropBox, integrate them into iOS and be done with it. That would give you a cloud (read: Internet) based solution to transfer and store files as well as give your iOS device one local place to look for files that was sandboxes and totally safe. I'd love to be able to download files from the web, on my iOS device, right to this folder and when I get home guess what? Thanks to MobileMe I've got a local copy on my Mac too. Apps like DropBox allow to keep you drafts in the cloud and work on them whenever, wherever. In fact this whole article was written in the app PlainText for the iPad that syncs to my DropBox account. So that gave me the ability to work on it anywhere and it also gives me several backup in case I really screwed this one up.

So even though this review covered a lot of feature that are indicative of the current and previous generation of the iPad, I whole-heartedly recommend the iPad 2 to anyone that is interested in a tablet. Even if you're an iPad 1 owner it's a worthy upgrade, it's more evolutionary that revolutionary, but I can't state enough how much a difference the speed and thinness make when using the iPad 2. There are so many options for you if you have a first gen iPad and you're looking to upgrade: sell it to help offset the cost, give it to a family member a spouse, parent, or sibling that would love to have an iPad at little or no cost, or you could always go the donation route. A lot of schools and libraries are looking to iPads to get kids excited and engaged with the curriculum by using iPads.

If you don't believe me, just head down to an Apple Store or Best Buy and spent a few minutes with an iPad. You may not "need" one but I guarantee you want one.

The Apple iPad 2

Today Steve Jobs took the stage (despite being on a medical leave) along with Tim Cook and Phil Schiller to announce the next iteration of the iPad. So what's new?

A5 - An all new processor dubbed the 'A5'. Apple's custom "system-on-a-chip" the A5 combines the GPU and CPU on to a single chip and this one is dual-core. "Twice as fast" Apple claims. The A5 also beefed up the GPU and Apple states you'll see up to 9x the performance with gaming.

Cameras - Probably the biggest grip of the first iPad, the iPad 2 now comes stocked with a front and rear HD camera. Of course with the cameras comes FaceTime but Apple also showed off iMovie for iPad, and even brought over Photo Booth.

All New Design - Although Apple kept the same screen size and resolution, the rest of the iPad has changed. From a new bezel (now in white or black), sporting glass all the way to the edge, to a new square shaped back. Oh and did I mention that it's 1/3 thinner too? They added two cameras and made it thinner and lighter...

AirPlay/Video Mirroring - AirPlay was introduced by Apple in iOS 4.2 that let you stream music/movies/pictures from and iOS device to an Apple TV. Now Apple is opening up AirPlay to all developers to get in on the action. Video Mirroring is going to let you plug an HDMI cable into your iPad 2 (via connector) and your iPad screen will show up, in 1080p, on your TV. The teaching applications here are limitless.

iOS 4.3 - Apple also announced that iPad will be shipping with iOS 4.3 which will include imporovements to Safari, AirPlay, Personal Hotspot for iPhone 4, and Home Sharing to iOS devices.

iPad 'Smart Cover' - Last Apple showed off their skills with accessories when the made the iPad Case, this year Apple out has outdone themselves with their new Smart Cover. Apple wanted a simple way to protect the new iPad while at the same time adding function. The Smart Cover attaches via magnets to the right side of the iPad and covers just the front of the iPad. When the Smart Cover is "closed" is also has the ability to put the iPad to sleep, and likewise wakes it when you open the cover. The Smart Cover also has two distinct folds that allow it to prop your iPad in different orientations to fit your needs.

Apple also informed us that they have sold 100 million iPhones and 15 million iPads to date. That's 15 million iPads in less than a year. With the onslaught and Android and WebOS tablets coming this year Apple knew they had to deliver. Nothing revealed today was "game changing" or surprising but Apple swiftly took all the wind out of sails of these cookie-cutter Android tablets coming out claiming they were better than the iPad; on paper anyway. Apple is now matched up spec-for-spec with all these upcoming tablets, but has two distinct advantages: iTunes and name recognition.

iTunes gives user a simple and quick way to not only organize all of their media (music/movies/tv shows/podcasts/apps/games) but to also sync it to their iPad or iPhone/iPod. The Android OS just turns the device into a thumb drive essentially and expects users to computer OS to move their media to their device. So they have to find their music/movies/pictures and then locate their Android device and copy that media to it. iTune user just hit "sync".

Face it, Apple and all of their products have huge name recognition. My parents and friends know what an iPad/iPhone/iPod is. But if I asked my parents about the Galaxy S Tab, Xoom, Droid X, or Palm Pre they'd have no idea what I'm talking about. All the upcoming tablets (and Android phones for that matter) are going to be lost in a sea of anonymity with little to differentiate themselves from one another let alone Apple. Consumers see iPads and "some other tablet" so unless these other tablets start beating Apple on price (which they are not) or come out with a killer feature that the iPad does not have (oh and flash isn't it) them it will be a tough road ahead. Just ask anyone else who makes MP3 players about how powerful the iPod brand is. Can you even name two other (dedicated) MP3 player besides the iPod?

So will I be picking up the iPad 2? You bet, I might even be first in line again like I was for the first iPad launch. The iPad has changed my life, 80% of my internet use is done on the iPad. With it's never ending battery, light weight, connectivity options, and apps oh the apps it's has replaced my notebook and iPhone as go to devices. It's still not the best device for long-form or content creation but we're getting there. With the merger of OSX and iOS in Apple's newest computer OS 'Lion' the future is looking good.

How To jailbreak iPhone With 4.2.1 (Tethered)

So you're looking to jailbreak your iPhone huh? I don't blame you. I love my iPhone (I had all four on launch day) but Apple (or my carrier) block features that I would want out of my iPhone. A lot of my feature requests have been addressed by Apple and integrated into iOS but there are still a few jailbreak apps that I'd hate to live without. But let's get to jailbreaking your phone then I'll take about some cools apps you may want to get.

*Warning*

This current jailbreak is "tethered" which means that every time you have to restart your iPhone/iTouch/iPad it will have to be connected to your computer and you HAVE to reboot it with the redsn0w jailbreak program. It's kind of a pain, but honestly, how much do you every restart your iPhone? I've been been running with this jailbreak for 4 weeks and I've had no issues except when a friend turned my iPad off...

*End Warning*

So you've been warned and you know the risks, so let's move on you rebel you. First the items you'll need is redsn0w (the jailbreak app) and the 4.2.1 update from Apple. I've included both in a .zip file for you. *Note* You MUST have 4.2.1 already installed on your iDevice before jailbreaking it. So you're running 4.2.1 on your iDevice and you're ready to go.

Just download my jailbreak.zip file and you'll have both files you need to jailbreak. Here's the link:

In the zip are two files:

- redsn0w.app (version 0.9.6b4)
- iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw (iPhone 4 ONLY) If you have a different iPhone, iPad, or iTouch you'll need to find that firmware on you computer.

So open up redsn0w and you see this screen:

So click 'browse' and select the 4.2.1 firmware for your device. I've included the firmware for only the iPhone 4.

As you can see in this list I have both the iPhone 4 firmware and iPad 3G in my list. I've selected the iPhone 4 firmware. Then click 'open'.

So the first step is to check the 'Install Cydia' box then click next.

Follow the instruction... Plug your iPhone into your Mac and power it down. Click next and get ready for some ninja finger moves! Hold your iPhone in both hands and be read.

Again, follow the instructions. You'll be doing this several times, so don't worry it gets easier. Now redsn0w will do it's thing and jailbreak your iPhone. So now we need to boot your phone "tethered", by now it's most likely booted up and looks normal but if you scroll over to Cydia it's probably just a white icon. So we need to boot tethered. So open up redsn0w again and select the 4.2.1 firmware.

But this time select this check box to boot tethered. You'll have to go through the same ninja finger moves to put your iPhone into what's called DFU mode.

Next you should get this message and your iPhone should be booting up. If you get an error message, don't worry. You can always retry, a common error is that someone has their iPhone plugged into a USB hub or a "low-powered" USB port. So try plugging your iPhone directly into your computer or if it was plug it into a USB port closer to the front of the MacBook.

Next your iPhone should be booted up and look a bit like this.

So now open up Cydia and preform all the updates that it requests. The shitty thing is after it's done updating, you'll need to reboot... Which means using redsn0w again, remember you'll need it ever time you reboot. So use redsn0w to boot tethered and once you're back up open Cydia again. Now let's get you some cool apps that Apple doesn't approve of.

I'll just go in alphabetical order here: *Note* Most of these apps I'm recommending you will need to pay for. Cydia is a full-blown app store, so don't expect that everything is free here. These developers work just as hard (or more) than developers that are in the app store.

Cyntact - This is made by Jay Freeman (or "saurik" the guy that invented Cydia) and it puts your contacts picture next to their name in address book. It's a small thing but cool.

HapticPro - This is one that I can live without. All it does is give you force feedback (vibrate) when you touch the screen. So using the keyboard, opening an app, navigating menus, etc... You just get a little rumble. You'll be amazed how much you miss it when you don't have it.

My3G - This is a cool app. This "tricks" you apps into thinking they are on WiFi even if they're not. So this enables FaceTime over 3G, or Skype, make YouTube video quality better (but slower).

MyWi 4.0 - This is tethering. You can tether via USB or WiFi. It's super easy and works great. *Note* This setup requires a reboot.

SBSettings - This is the last one I'll take about today. With a simple left-to-right swipe on the top of your screen you get this drop down menu. Which gives you quick access to toggles to turn off or on. Such as: GPS location, airplane mode, WiFi, Bluetooth, brightness, etc... You can even "respring" from here which is basically a reboot of sorts, and you don't need resn0w to respring!

Well, that's my guide and my app list for now. I hope you enjoy your jailbroken iDevice as much as I do. Feel free to leave comments or questions below, I'm no expert but I'll help if I can.

Apple once again had the collective tech community holding their breath waiting for the announcement of the mythical Tablet.

The general impression following the event seemed to be fairly negative, as was my own. Mostly people were expecting much more from the iPad, all due to tremendous amount of hype and all the rumors that have been circulating for years now. Speculations were from, OLED screens, a front and back camera, touch capacitive case, to even facial recognition software. Most of these speculations were crazy and far fetched, but that didn't stop people from wanting them and more important being disappointed when they didn't get them. I have to admit I was one of the initial people that was immediately disappointing, my own expectation were artificially inflated from all the hype.

After all the buzz wore off and I had time to reflect about the announcement and see video and pictures of the iPad, I have changed my tune. What I wanted initially from the Tablet was a touch Mac computer, basically a touch MacBook if you will. What made me change my mind was clearing my head of all the preconceptions I had going into the press brief. It was then that I realized how useful this device was going to be in my life. If you read the blog then you know I've recently hacked a netbook (Making A Hackint0sh) and been using it by running OSX. Although it works great, it is far from perfect. The iPad is a perfect alternative to those looking for a computer in the 'netbook' catagory, it's small, lightweight, inexpensive, has a great battery life, and does pictures, music, movies, email, and the web. Another bonus, for those that want it (options are good) is being able to buy a model with AT&T 3G networking built-in, with no contract mind you, just pay-as-you-go. So unlike a typical netbook you could virtually have internet anywhere you want on a 10" touch-screen tablet that also has your entire media collection on it.

So will I be buying one? You bet ya. I can see uses for this in the living room, at work, on vacation, in classrooms, etc... Still not convinced? Watch Apple's own video introducing the iPad and a few of it's features.

Making A Hackint0sh. The Samsung N130

Update: I've got WiFi working! I bought a Dell 1397 B/G/N WiFi Half-Mini PCI-e card and it working perfect with OSX right out of the box.

A word of warning for anyone that is going to install OSX on to their N130, REPLACE THE ORGINAL HARD DRIVE. If you wipe the factory hard drive it will be very hard to reinstall Windows if you every should need to. You'll need to buy a 2.5" SATA hard drive to replace the factory one.

Second: not everything works 'out of the box' in OSX. Audio, WiFi, and Ethernet DO NOT WORK, also the computer DOES NOT sleep like a normal Mac would when you shut the lid of the laptop. I was able to get audio working and I am buying a replacement WiFi card, one that is compatible with OSX. So then my only problem would be the computer not sleeping, but hopefully someone smarter than me is working to that.

First off I followed this guide to get 10.6 on to the N130. Gizmodo Hackintosh

That's well the easy part. The next step is upgrading to 10.6.2, which as I'm sure you know Apple disabled Atom support in 10.6.2 but there's an easy fix. Next just follow this guide to keep Atom support in 10.6.2 Meklort Guide

I've made a dedicated page on one of my personal sites to store the files you (and I) need to get the N130 working.

Now it gets hard... First off audio doesn't work, WiFi doesn't work, and Ethernet doesn't work. With some help I was able to get audio working perfectly headphone jack and all!
So you have to install tons of crap to get audio working but I guess it's worth it to have sound running...

1. Install Apple Developer Tools (Xcode) it's free from Apple but you have to have an Apple ID and download an 800MB file.

2. Next you need to install a crap ton of drivers, I don't know if they all work together or hell if just one is working but my audio is working and I installed them all. I don't remember the order, and I don't think it matters but you need to install:

- AzaliaAudio.pkg
- Full Sound 10.5.7.pkg
- HDAEnabler.kext
- VoodooHDA.kext

(You can download all the files from me)

So that's a total of 5 files if you include Xcode. The .pkg will install themselves but kext files are drivers and I use Kext Helper B7 to install the kext files. After that audio should be working just fine, you might find the volume a little low so go to: System Preferences/Sound/Output you'll see a bunch of "Analog PCM #0" devices turn up the 'Master' and 'PCM' all the way up and that should help.

Edit: Here's a picture of Sound in Sys Prefs. Unfortunately you know have tons of these "Analog PCM #0" devices... The only two that seem to matter are the first two: 'Master' and 'PCM'. Turn PCM all the way up, then select 'Master' and then set the volume at your desired level. Another bad thing is, the PCM and Master reset every time you reset your computer...

Internet is still not working on my N130 but I have an external USB WiFi card that I found some drivers for so I'm using that for now. I also have my iPhone hacked and I use the built-in tethering to get internet on the go. The internal WiFi card (Realtek RTL8192E) I can't find support for, my plan is to buy a replacement card that works natively with OSX, and I'm still on the hunt for the "best" card for OSX. If you start looking for a card you'll need a Half Mini PCI-e WiFi card. The "Half" and "Mini" are import when looking, I've already bought 1 card that didn't fit...

Since starting Adidat 3 1/2 years ago a lot has changed, in my life and in the tech industry as a whole. Adidat has been my portal to get news that I find interesting out to people that find me interesting. iPhone 3.0 Beta Preview.

So I was able to get my hands on the beta version of the iPhone 3.0 software due out this summer. I'm going to run down some of the new features you expect in 3.0 and how said features are working so far.

Cut, Copy, & Paste

This has gotta be the most requested feature that iPhone users have wanted and iPhone hater have bragged about. CC&P couldn't be easier to use on the iPhone, simply hold your finger down on some part of the text that you want to CC&P. Then you get the two "bookend" markers and just adjust those over your desired text and select cut or copy.

Now, get to the spot were you would like to paste said text and simply tap. The paste dialog comes up, and you're all done. CC&P works across all applications, email, notes, web, 3rd party apps, etc... Apple also included a cool 'undo' feature to CC&P, shake your iPhone and an undo dialog box pops up giving you the option to take back you paste.

Call Information

A small, but nice, addition is more details added to you phone call history. Black text with the little phone symbol means out going call, just black mean, incoming, and red is a missed call.

The out going feature is what's new here and you can see just how detailed in gets in this screen, you now get the time and duration that each call was made.

Spotlight Search

There is a new homepage that is on the far left (note the magnifying in the first screen shot )that is dedicated to search. Simply start typing and the iPhone searches the entire phone, it's unclear at this time if 3rd party apps will have privilege to this search function.

A quick search of the term "iphone" brought up two results for an email, and a calendar note. You can search, songs, emails, calendar, notes, applications, and contacts.

Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)

Stereo bluetooth or geekily know as A2DP, is a fancy term for wireless headphones. So finally us iPhone users can finally go cordless while rockin' out. With A2DP you also have to option to be able to use your A2DP headphones as a headset to make and receive calls. I just got a pair of the Motorola S9-HD and so far the experience has been great.

There is a new Bluetooth icon on the bottom right when the iPhone is in iPod mode. Pushing this button brings up a dialog box asking where you would like your audio routed to. With my new headset I was able to listen to music and take/receive phone calls but the only button on the headset that seem to work is volume. I'm not sure if this is an Apple issue or a Moto issue, but I'm hoping it's a something that will be fixed when 3.0 comes out this summer.

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)

MMS is best decribed as SMS's (text messaging) big brother. With the new MMS feature in 3.0 you will be able to send pictures, voice memos, and rumored videos, as well as standard text messages.

Most descent phones these days have MMS capabilities and Apple took a lot of heat by not including it thus far in the iPhone. In my opinion, I've never liked MMS and never knew anyone that used it. Apple rightly touted email as a far superior way to send these files, but it seems the loud minority has made Apple change their mind. I do like Apples implementation of MMS, so who knows maybe I'll grow to use it.

AutoFill

This is one of the more interesting features because I've heard nothing about it. Basically it uses your contact information and can fill in web forms for you. Name, phone number, email, address, passwords... I've used it a few times and it's worked perfect everytime, I see this becoming a very handy time saver.

Honorable Mention Features

In-App Purchases - Developers can now offer you purchases in-app/game to buy more stuff. New levels, new content, new info. This is going to be a good thing for apps like, games, eBook readers, new paper apps.
3rd Party Access - Developers can now custom make apps that work with specific hardware components by wire or Bluetooth. The app Apple showed off was a Glucose monitor that plugged into the iPhone and kept records for your suger levels on you phone, giving you a better way to keep track of your levels.
Turn By Turn GPS - Finally Apple will allow devs to make a GPS app with Turn-By-Turn directions. The catch? Devs have to bring their own maps to the party, the iPhone Google Maps can not be used. So expect some apps from Tom Tom and Garmin, but I wouldn't hold your breath for a small player to pay for map license fee's.
Voice Memos - A new Apple made app, Voice Memos, allows you to record, send, and edit voice memos.
Notes Sync - Now your iPhone notes will sync to either your Mail.app or Outlook software.
Tethering - This is the act of connecting your iPhone to your computer and surfing the web through your iPhone's data connection anywhere. Don't have WiFi around? No problem just connect your iPhone to your computer and away you're surfing. Apple has this feature ready but is waiting on individual carries to "aprove" the use of such an app. Boo AT&T.
Push Notification - This is Apple way to conserve battery life but allow apps to pseudo work in the background. Right now if you have an IM client on your iPhone, the app has to be open for you to be able to receive IM messages. With Push, even when the iPhone is asleep you will receice data from apps set to use the Push service.

As promised, Apple just debuted its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0. Much of the news seemed developer-centric, but there are certainly plenty of consumer implications down the road, along with long-awaited functions like copy and paste, A2DP, MMS and universal Spotlight search. Improvements include:

App and developer functionality (more here)
Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
Devs can also connect with hardware accessories over in their apps now, such as a blood pressure monitor -- or perhaps a keyboard? Connectivity works through the dock connector or over Bluetooth.
Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.
General functionality
Cut, copy and paste. At last! You can shake the phone to undo and redo the action, and it works with both text and photos, allowing Mail to send multiple photos at a time. (more here)

It'll also work for 1st gen iPhone owners, though they won't receive A2DP or MMS due to hardware limitations. iPod touch owners will be able to update for $9.95, just like last time.

Bungie Continues To Inovate With "Mythic".

Ok so we all know that the second-to-last map pack for Halo 3 is coming out 3-3-09 right? With the maps, Sandbox, Orbital, and Assembly right? But now Bungie has shown us how they continue to innovate and raise the bar higher and higher for other developers. Orbital and Assembly are going to be your standard run-of-mill Halo 3 levels, but not Sandbox, oh no.

Sandbox is going to be very unique and extend the life of Halo 3 even more. How you ask? First off, Sandbox has three different "planes" to it. The middle plane (pictured above) is more or less your typical level, a box canyon with two bases and objects for cover. The cool thing about this plane is that everything can be removed leaving you a blank canvas to work with, create whatever you want, a la the level Foundry.

Now for the good stuff. Sandbox has a second plane that is in the air high above the first plane I talked about.

You can basically make a floating level high in the stratosphere of Sandbox, the blue grid serves as a marker and also a "net" to set your level on.

The sky is truly the limit here, the possibility are endless for people to make a Halo 3 level as they see fit. These photos and levels are courtesy of my friends over at Tied The Leader, who got a sneak peak at playing on Sandbox.

Now the third plane, as you may have guessed, is underground in a Crypt. In the center of the map is this tiny hole in the ground and it is the only way in or out of the Crypt, and I assure you it's quiet a drop.

Once inside the Crypt is basically just a big empty room, perfect for you Forging needs or say a match of Grifball!

So, as you can see, Sandbox is shaping up to be quiet the Halo 3 experience. To top it off I'll end this with a new Forge item to play with: Killballs. Killballs (as seen above) are big orange balls of electricity that kill anything that enters them... Spartans, Warthogs, Tanks, etc... So be on the look out for Killballs, make sure to steer clear if you see them.

More Halo 3 Maps On The Way.

When Halo Wars ships March 3rd it is going to include 3 new multiplayer maps for Halo 3 inside. Pretty smart marketing on Microsoft's party... Of course you'll be able to buy the maps without buying Halo Wars but that will be a few months down the line, and really what self-respecting Halo fan could wait that long?

The new Mythic Map Pack will include three new maps: Assembly, Orbital, and Sandbox. Sandbox is of course the picture above, Assembly I've talked about here, and Orbital has yet to be shown to the public.

Sandbox looks pretty cool to me, I've always been a fan of Sandtrap and this looks like more of the same. The difference with Sandbox seems to be that all the pieces could be removable, so that would make for a great sandbox to Forge around in...

Apple's One To One Training.

So for my birthday this year my fiancee got me into Apple's One To One program. This program is designed for beginners and advanced user alike, so far I've learned way more than I ever could have on my own. The idea is simple; basically you go to an Apple Store and a Mac expert will train you on any program that is made by Apple. This includes: Mac OSX, iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iDVD, iTunes, and iWeb), iCal, iWork (Pages, Keynote, and Numbers) or even just basic computer tips. The price isn't too bad either, for only $100 you get 52 person lessons (one a week for a year) and each lesson lasts an hour long.

I know what you're thing... "But Justin, you're so good with computers what could you possibly have left to learn?" Well, like I said this program is host to beginners and advanced users and there is something for everyone. I have learned so much from this program that makes my day-to-day life on the Mac so much easier.

So if you or a loved one (great for parents) would like to be able to use your Mac to it's full potiential I highly suggest investing in Apple's One To One program. Head over to Apple's One To One website to learn more and sign up.

I've been wanting one for a long time, I love my MacBook but a 13" screen just isn't big enough for everyday use.

20" is defiantly better and now I have two Mac in my office, I know you're jealous.

Steve Jobs Takes A Leave Of Absence.

On January 14th Apple released a press statement that Steve Jobs was stepping down as CEO of Apple and taking a leave of absence due to his medical state. Later that day Jobs sent out an email to Apple imployee's to inform them of his plans to return in June:

Team, I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June. I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan. I look forward to seeing all of you this summer. Steve

I can't really say this move surprises me, with Apple's recent announcement to pullout of Macworld and for Phil Schiller to present the last keynote instead of Jobs, something was definitely going on. Jobs had a battle with Cancer in 2004 and let's hope that's not rearing it's ugly head again. Let's hope Jobs has a quick recovery, and gets back to making the worlds great electronics.

I'm not one to usually delve into political banter (especially on the blog) but this year I'm going to vote, I'm going to make a difference! I took a great little quiz over at Glassbooth.org to get 'second' opinion and it looks like my vote is staying the same. Glassbooth.org has some really great resources: during some of the questions they have hyperlinks on some of the words/phrases to help with any confusion, and afterwords it gives you a percentage breakdown in each catagory. You can then further drill down into each catagory and read quotes and watch video of the canidates in relationship to the topic.

Seeing as my hot button topics are: science, internet, gay rights, and abortion, I'd have to say Obama FTW.

Apple's New MacBook Line.

Apple today announced a refresh to their entire notebook lineup this afternoon. First up we have the MacBook Pro.

The specs are about in line with what they have been. The only notable exception is the transition to the Nvidia GeForce 9400M in both the MacBook Pro and the MacBook. Nvidia cooked up something really special here and it could help Mac's become a force to be reckoned with as far as computer gaming is concerned.

Here's a spec rundown:

-2.4GHz Core2 Duo

-15" or 17" Screen

-2GB or 4GB of RAM

-250GB or 320GB HDD

-Nvidia GeForce 9400M

-Backlit Keyboard

-Glass LED Display

-Price: $1,999 - $2,799

The MacBook is almost identical to the new MacBook Pro's with a horsepower downgrade, no blacklit keyboard, and a smaller 13.3" display.

And seemingly in an interest to be competitive in the market and to get the "Us too!" PR line into some press releases Apple is still selling the 'old' white MacBook for only $999. So now Apple can add a bullet point saying that 'they too' have notebooks under $1,000.

What I am most excited about in today's announcement is the new all glass, multi-touch, buttonless, trackpad. Let me explain:

Glass - smooth, frictionless, and pretty. Think iPhone.

Buttonless - Apple trackpad's have always been on the cutting edge IMO and todays announcement proves that. Apple went ahead and removed the button from below the trackpad and made the entire trackpad a clickable button. That's right now you can click anywhere in the trackpad, you're no longer a slave to clicking at the bottom. Right-click you ask? Simply press down with two fingers, and -blam- a right-click.

Multi-touch - Apple has added a slue of cool new touch features to the trackpad, it now has options for 1, 2, 3, and even 4 finger touch gestures. Use two fingers to scroll up and down, and pinch to zoom in and out. Swipe with three fingers to flip through you photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show the desktop or switch applications.

Well needless to say I can't wait to get my hands on these bad boys, Jobs and Co. says they are shipping today and will be in stores tomorrow. I might just have to buy one for 'review' yeah that's it. ;-)

Adrift in Tokyo

Since Brian is still wearing his Sailor Moon costume and having his picture taken at the show and Shishka is overcome with jealousy at the costume’s authenticity, here’s a bit of information in yet another slow newsweek for Bungie.

Bungie happily announced Halo 3: Recon, earlier this week at TGS during the Microsoft Keynote speech to attendees of the Tokyo-based show. In the keynote’s wake there’s been a whole mess of questions about Halo 3: Recon that we’re going to clear up below.

What is Halo 3: Recon?

Halo 3: Recon is a standalone, disc-based campaign expansion to Halo 3. It will be available at fine retailers around the globe in Fall of 2009.

I read on some Liveblog that Master Chief got out of the drop pod?

Negative, ghost rider. Instead of playing as the Master Chief (like players did in Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3) in H3: Recon, players take control of an ODST (an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) who entered orbit just after the slipspace rupture on New Mombasa (that event, you recall, took place as Regret left the planet – and in Halo 2, you followed him as the Chief). Is Halo 3 : Recon a 3rd person / squad based shooter?

Nope. "Recon" is definitely first person and it's definitely still a Halo game as you've come to know it. That said, playing as an ODST in this new setting will bring some new twists to the gameplay.

How much will Halo 3 : Recon cost?

The price point has not yet been determined. While there will be a lot of content to enjoy and a great deal of replayability, this is still viewed as an expansion to Halo 3 more so than its equal.

We saw Assembly at PAX 2008, when will we get more downloadable content for Halo 3?

The Mythic Map Pack will be made available via Xbox Live Marketplace in early 2009. “Winter,” as they say. As soon as we have more details we will certainly share them.

Will the Recon campaign content or the other multiplayer maps be available through Xbox LIVE Marketplace?

Beyond the Mythic Map Pack early next year, there are no plans to release other portions of the Recon package outside of the retail box.

Is there a multiplayer component to Halo 3: Recon?

There are multiplayer maps that will appear as a part of the Halo 3: Recon package. This includes the aforementioned Mythic Map Pack in addition to a few others. You can also experience the entire Recon campaign cooperatively with up to 4 players.

Will we get to play as ODSTs in multiplayer now?

No. The multiplayer maps included with the retail package are straight up Halo 3 multiplayer maps. The ODST and other components that make up the Recon campaign are in a separate bucket and not crossing over into the competitive multiplayer realm. Think of it as two games in one.

Will the Halo 3 : Recon multiplayer maps work with "regular" copies of Halo 3?

If you purchase the Mythic Map Pack early next year via Marketplace and your friend waits and gets them with the Halo 3 : Recon retail package next Fall, you can still play together. The multiplayer maps are all part of the Halo 3 "title ID" family, regardless of where or how you get them.

What about other features from Halo 3?

Halo 3: Recon will still make use of Screenshots, Forge and Saved Films just like Halo 3 does.

Will Halo 3 : Recon have new achievements? Are these the same as the ones already "leaked" online?

There are actually two separate buckets for new achievements. The multiplayer achievements will be considered additive to your existing Halo 3 gamerscore. Some of these will be available when the Mythic Map Pack is released on Marketplace early next year. The Recon campaign will include a complete set of unique achievements and a full bounty of 1000 gamerscore to obtain.

This dude at 7-11 told me that there’s a new Campaign version of Forge coming?

Get your Slurpee somewhere else. The maps included with Halo 3: Recon certainly support Forge and the functionality it affords players. But, there isn’t a new Campaign Forge being added to the Halo 3 experience.

I read somewhere that this is the last Halo game Bungie is making. Say it isn't so!

We're not ready to discuss the other projects underway within the studio right now but Halo 3 : Recon does represent the final basket of goodness that we will be delivering for the Halo trilogy. There are no more offshoots or side stories in the works.

Is this the game that Bungie was intending to announce at E3?

Yes, we are happy to finally be able to pull back the curtain and share our latest project with our fans.

Will Halo 3 : Recon still use the Halo 3 engine?

Yes, this is very much an extension of the Halo 3 you have come to know and love complete with all the features included with the original game.

Is this all Bungie has been working on since becoming independent last October?

"Recon" represents one of several projects that we have underway within the Studio but it's the nearest to release and the only one we're able to talk about for now.

If this is an expansion built on top of the existing Halo 3 engine, why will it take two years to create?

Development of "Recon" actually just began in earnest this past Spring. This project is in the hands of a small team and represents our most ambitious release cycle yet as a Studio.

Halo 3: Recon

Microsoft held a press conference late last night at the Tokyo Game Show '08 and talked about a little game called Halo 3.

First off, no Master Chief. This story takes place right before the events leading up to Halo 3 and the Chief's landing on Earth. You play as an elite unit of Marines known as the ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) which is about as close as you can get to being a Spartan without, you know, being half robot.

This is a full-on expansion set so we're looking at new campaign levels, new multiplayer maps, and everything you've come to expect from Halo 3: Saved films, Forge, Co-op, etc... It looks like the game will be distributed via disk if the image below is any indication.

This still doesn't explain the mysterious new achievements that have shown up in Halo 3 after the newest update, so it looks like the "normal" version of Halo 3 is still in story for at least one more map pack "Mythic". Specifically six new levels are mentioned in the achievements: Assembly, Citadel, heretic, Longshore, Orbital, and Sandbox. I've already talked about Assembly here, but Bungie has been mum on the other five maps so far.

A few things I've noticed in the trailer (below) that I find interesting are: the Brutes (pictured above) seem a little different, smaller, less shielded, somehow. Also it looks like the weapon that your ODST Marine is holding looks like a SMG but with a silencer on it? Thought?

So I decided to jailbreak my iPhone 3G solely for this app, PdaNet. It's a very simple but amazingly useful tool, it let's you use your AT&T 3G connection on your laptop. So basically you connect you iPhone and laptop together via WiFi and then over your 3G connection your laptop can browse the internet.

My point is that anywhere you have cell coverage you can get online with you laptop, for "free". So you'll never have to worry about finding a WiFi spot, just bring your iPhone along and you're good to go.

Halo 3: Keep It Clean.

Today Bungie revealed the next part in their plan for world domination, a teaser trailer for what is being called a "New Campaign Experience" for Halo 3.

Everybody is speculating as to what Bungie is going to bring to Halo 3, rumors from new campaign levels where you play as a Marine (and not the Chief), to more multiplayer levels, or even both. Bungie, so far, has released maps in three waves so far: Heroic, Legendary, and Cold Storage. With the previous three maps releases there has never been this amount of hype nor something to the magnitude of a teaser trailer. So what I'm betting on is a full out Halo 3 Expansion, Halo 3: Mythic. You can either buy this on a disc or as a full download strait to your Xbox 360 hard drive.

This is a picture that was taken at PAX '08 where Bungie first revealed the new map Assembly. At the time no one knew what Mythic was, and Bungie just brushed it off as a "PAX version"

As you can see since the update to Halo 3 a few days ago, some interesting achievements have popped up in reference to the Mythic Maps.

Confused? Me too. At this point there seems to be multiplayer "Mythic Maps" coming at some point, but if you download the new Halo 3 video from your Xbox 360 on the Marketplace, the describtion does say, "New Campaign Experience". So it seems that we have multiplayer and singleplayer content coming. But just as with any Bungie products we won't know anything until Bungie wants us to know something.

Update #2 Is Incoming For Halo 3.

In the latest Bungie Update they talk about a new update coming to Halo. Items of note are: rank changes, new achievements, and a lock down on cheaters. But in true blog fashion I'll just repost what Bungie wrote.

Inevitably, this will be blown out of context, misread and misunderstood, but let’s do it anyway.

For a number of reasons ranging from obvious to sublime, Title Update 2 (which is the new, hip, Xbox 360-version way of saying “Auto Update” or “Patch”), introduces new Achievements to Halo 3. Last weekend at Penny-Arcade Expo we played Assembly on the TU2, which meant that folks would see and buzz about the new achievements. These will be made live when TU2 turns on later this month - the previously announced date may slip a bit closer to the Halo 3 one-year anniversary.

Here’s a look at these achievements which can be earned via the Legendary Maps and Halo 3 Campaign:
Vidmaster Challenge: Lightswitch (0 points) – Get to the rank of Lieutenant in any playlist in the new EXP progression system.
Vidmaster Challenge: 7 on 7 (0 points) – Enter into any ranked or social playlist with 7 EXP on the 7th of the month.
Vidmaster Challenge: Annual (0 points) – After 9/25/08, complete Halo on 4-player Legendary LIVE co-op, with Iron, and everyone in Ghosts.
Double Double (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get two Double Kills during any ranked or social match.
Poor Yorick (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get 3 Oddball melee kills during any ranked or social match.
Came…From…Behind (50 points) – On a Legendary map, get 3 assassinations during any ranked or social match.
Defend This (50 points) – On a Legendary map, get a flag melee kill during any ranked or social match.
Flag Dropped (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get 2 flag carrier kills during any ranked or social match.
Road Rage (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get 5 Warthog chaingun kills during any ranked or social match.
Look Both Ways (50 points) – On a Legendary map, get a Splatter Spree during any ranked or social match.
As folks have seen, these aren’t the only achievements we’re adding. But without proper context, there’s not a whole lot else we’re going to say. Stay tuned.

Title Update 2

Like we’ve said previously, there’s a bunch of under-the-hood changes in TU2 that will be largely invisible to players. Things like rare occurrences of crashes, server-side support for data collection, making more data available and consumable for internal use – you know, the sort of bullet points that warm engineering loins and sing the rest of us a lullaby.

There are also some “peace of mind” changes that should improve player experiences online in Halo 3. We’ve done a bunch of work to increase our ability to detect cheating. The numbers of bans on the banhammer threads ebb and flow, but not a day goes by sans bans. These changes will make that science even more exact than it already is.

Title Update 2 will also introduce a brand new type of ban. This is one Shishka and I are super excited for. It’s harsh, it’s metered fairly and most of all, when it hits you, it hurts so bad. This new spike on the banhammer will soon drip wet with the blood of jerks and the innards of sinners.

Another thing we’d file under the “peace of mind” changes portion of TU2 is that we’ll be taking a much closer look at habitual quitters and their contribution to the Halo 3 population. It’s no secret that players quitting out of a game makes a suboptimal experience for those left behind, from black screen host migrations, to the general sour-taste losing while down-a-man actually leaves. For the purposes of this week’s update, this isn’t a “don’t quit or you’ll be banned” threat – but instead, a courteous notification that this is something we’re investigating and intend to continue investigating in the coming months.

The most visible change coming to Halo 3 in TU2 is the in-game addition of Playlist Ratings. We’ve talked about Playlist Ratings before, but here’s a quick recap:

Playlist Ratings are the playlist-level decoupling of Trueskill values (the in-game number next to your name) from Experience (the icon next to your name).
You will now have a separate military rating (based purely on EXP) in each playlist. When TU2 goes live, everyone will begin at 0 EXP. This means that being a General in a Playlist is based on how many games you’ve won in the Playlist, not based on the Trueskill number next to your name.
Your Trueskill values have not been reset. If someone checks your Service Record they will still see your Highest Skill.

Halo 3's Newest Map: Assembly.

Bungie unveiled a new map today for Halo 3, code named "Purple Reign", officially called Assembly. No info is being released as to when the map will be released, so stay tuned. More screen shots below:

Assembly's 'purpleness' and symmetry reminds me a bit of the Halo 2 map Midship. Bungie has been under a lot of pressure from the "hardcore" Halo community (MLG if you will) to remake Midship or a similar style map AKA: one with symmetry.

There is a apparently a glitch in Tiger Woods '08 that let's a player take a shot from the water instead of making it an out of bounds shot. So EA did something genius with their marketing and instead of fixing the "glitch" EA makes a video of Tiger actually taking a shot from the water!

Bungie Wins Two Mega Awards.

So Bungie came away with EDGE Magazine's Most Innovative Game Award, in big part due to Halo 3's: Forge, the Party System, and 4 player (online) co-op. Bungie's acceptance speech also hinted at their new project, or at least that they're working on one...

Bungie also recently walking away with G4's Game of the Year Award. Up again stiff competition from games such as: Call of Duty 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

The "New Xbox Experience".

This fall Microsoft is bring a huge change to the Xbox 360 they call it the "New Xbox Experience" I think that's lame and I'm calling it Dashboard 2.0. There will be tons of changes and I'll try to cover the basic:

First off (as you can see) it has a whole new look to it, MS has gotten rid of the "Blades" and made this new "Channels" interface. If you love the Blade interface don't worry, now when you press the Guide Button it will bring up a Mini Blade interface with a lot more functionality than before when you pushed the Guide Button.

So don't worry if you still want the "blade" interface all you have to do is push the guide button.

One of the biggest coups at E3 was Microsoft's announcement that they now have a partnership with Netflix. Starting this fall Xbox Live member's and Netflix subscribers will be able to stream 10,00 movies instantly from Netflix right to their Xbox 360, all for "free". All you do is put the movies you want to watch in your Netflix Instant Queue, and they instantly appear on your Xbox 360.

Not too much info is known about all of the channels but Microsoft did announce that users will now be able to copy full retail games to the hard drive. So this is beneficial for two reasons: first is that games will load much, much faster. The second is that even though you will still have the disc in the drive to play (you know to make sure you still own the game) the drive will not be spinning which will cut down tremendously on the noise the 360 puts out.

One of the key things that MS is trying to do with Dashboard 2.0 is make content easier to find. As this screen shot shows each game will have it's own unique section in marketplace, giving you descriptions, pictures, and video previews.

Community is also getting a big push in Dash 2.0. Microsoft is added Avatar's to the Xbox 360, much like a Nintendo Mii, your avatar will be customizable and be playable in certain games. This new c0mmunity page is now your Friends List, as your friends sign on there avatar will pop up on the screen.

Another big change is the "Party System", you will now be able to get into a group of 8 people and travel around from game to game playing with your friends. From Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, GTA 4, or even to a movie. That's right, if everyone has a Netflix account the host can select a movie to watch and everyone can watch the movie "together" all while chatting away.

Another new channel is Xbox Live Primetime, this is going to be full of game-show style games. The kicker is that the games are on a schedule, so you can only play the game in it's time slot. So 1 vs. 100 might be only on at 7pm but there might be 10 different games going.

Look for the new Dashboard 2.0 to be dropping this Fall.

Update Your iPhone.

So the iPhone update 2.0.1 is out. Since the release of the iPhone 3G and the 2.0 software for all the iPhone's (& iPod Touch's) people have been complaining about crashes and sluggishness of the iPhone. Hopefully this patch will fix some of these issues. Apple, of course is being quiet on what fixes are included in the patch but here's the list so far:

Faster keyboard response time
Less lag in the phone book
Quick sync/backup times

I apologize for the lack of updates in the last several weeks, but I have had my hands full. Between my "day" job (working in the ER), running my computer company, planning a wedding, and studying like crazy for my paramedic license, I haven't even had time to check my RRS feeds let along do some blogging.

Everything seems to be under control at this point though, I did pass my paramedic exam (so I am now certified to save your life) and the harder parts of the wedding have been planned. So now that I'm able to relax a bit I have some time for blogging, gaming, and hanging with my fiance. As any loyal Halo fan knows Bungie is obsessed with the number 7. in all of Bungie's mythologies, and all the games the number 7 always plays a big part. Being as such, July 7th has been declared Bungie Day. Be the great guys that Bungie is they are giving us a free map on Bungie Day, Cold Storage.

If Cold Storage looks familiar, that's because it should. It's a remake of Halo 1's level 'Chill Out' (Dude, you really need to.). So after you're long holiday weekend (here in the USA) be sure to pick up Cold Storage for free in the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Reinventing The Xbox 360 Dashboard.

I've never been to the website www.thefanboys.com before but after reading their article about redesigning the Dashboard, I will definitely be back.

The article is very well written and very well thought out so I suggest giving it a read. Even though I don't really have a problem with the way the Dashboard is I do agree with a lot of the points made in the article, like ads for one.

Here's some cool new proposals:

A Search Function — Both to search what’s on your console and on the Marketplace. I know it’s a pain to type with the controller, but I’d still wager I can fumble around the d-pad to spell “Precipice” before I can navigate to Penny Arcade Adventures using the blades.

Hot Keys — Navigating the dashboard uses primarily the A, B, LT, and RT buttons. It would be nice to be able to assign X, Y, LB, and RB to specific functions in the dashboard or Marketplace, like bookmarks in a web browser. For example, if I like to check what’s new in the Marketplace every week, I could map that to the X button and jump right to it. Or if I want to go straight to my XBLA games, I could map that to the Y button and forget about moving through a number of screens to find them. As shown in this example, I’ve just mapped them to the other blades on the main dashboard.

Disc Tray Detail — The PS3 lets you see a nifty little video icon to show what’s in the system. I’d settle for some box art or one screen, along with some details on my progress in the game.

Reversal Of Ad And User Space — In this example, the dashboard would be dominated by my content with a larger, clearly visible wallpaper or theme, and a bigger gamerpic. I’ll relent and say that there could be some advertising on the dashboard, but I’d limit it to a standard web-size banner ad and the Inside Xbox feature with rolling updated headlines, because I’d hate to miss out on Major Nelson awkwardly staring into the camera.

The bad part is I knew a 3G iPhone was coming I just didn't know when. Well Apple announced today that the new iPhone will be shipping July 11th. So that means for the next month I will be iPhoneless. I picked up an AT&T GoPhone (there pay-as-you-go phone) and just threw in my SIM card.

Well, you never miss anything till it's gone and boy do I miss my iPhone already. It's only been six hours but I think I've found a solution:

GoPhone + iPod Nano = iPhone Killer.

Finally.

After months of speculation and rampant rumors, Steve Jobs unveiled the true iPhone 3G. So what are the final specs?

Two models: 8GB ($199) and a 16GB ($299) Huge price cut!
Slight redesign - The top and bottom are now curved and the back is all plastic. The 16GB version comes in either Black or White.
3G - The biggest feature request, this will double your internet speeds while on the go.
GPS - Now the iPhone can pinpoint your location exactly and give you directions.
Apps Store - This will be coming to the both iPhone versions since it is just a simple software update. But now you can buy games and applications straight from your phone from anyone who wants to make applications. Notable developers are: MLB, eBay, Sega, and of course Apple.
Mobile Me - Apple has renamed .Mac and added tons of cool new features and a great new web interface at www.me.com

The iPhone now supports Microsoft Exchange, it will now compete head-to-head with the Blackberry. (And win.)

The back of the iPhone 3G is now a glossy black (or white) plastic, the volume and the mute switch have turned to silver.

One of the apps shown off today was from Major League Baseball, as you can see it will keep you up to date with the latest baseball scores. Another app that is coming out on launch day is from eBay. Get notifications on everything you are selling/buying, or even browse items all from your iPhone.

Making The All Digital Jump.

With the help of the software HandBrake, I've decided to convert all of my DVD's into a digital format. The process is much like taking a CD and converting the songs into MP3's, just much, much longer. Video is much trickier than a simple song and the process takes about 2 and 1/2 hours for most DVD's. Since I've been home this week with my new puppy, Dexter, I've had a lot of time to kill and I've been doing about 3 movies a day. But one could go at a much more casual pace and just set a DVD to rip when you head off to bed.

HandBrake is very simple (and free!) to use and the quality is great, I don't even notice a difference going from my DVD's to the rip, and I'm an HD snob. HandBrake has all sorts of advanced setting but most of them are straight forward. They have encoding options for what ever you could want to play your movie on: Apple TV, iPod/iPhone, PSP, Xbox 360 whatever you could want. For me the "normal" option works just fine, just make sure and tick the check box for a "2 pass encoding" to make double sure that the audio and video are sync'd. The process is so easy in fact you could do it in 6 steps:

Insert DVD
Open HandBrake
Click the "source" button in the upper left
Select your DVD
Select your setting. iPod, Xbox 36o, etc...
Click Encode

And you can do these as soon as you install HandBrake, no crazy setup process. Each of my movies are right around 1 GB and I'm keeping them all on an external hard drive that I will eventually keep conected to my Xbox 360.

You see the Xbox 360 can play pretty much any audio/video file you throw at it. But if you give it a video file and a picture file with the same name you then have a DVD cover! For example, on my hard drive here I have one file called "Old School.m4v" (video file) and another "Old School.jpg" (image file) and the Xbox does the rest and gives you what you see above.
Now now one like big huge lists so if/when your digital movie collection gets to be too big all you have to do is separate the movies into different folder on the hard drive. So you could make folder into genre's: horror, Sifi, comedy, porn, you know whatever...

Whilst rummaging around these vast intertubes we living in more and more each day, I made a discovery. A discovery so that will shake you to the core of your existence. The catch? You need to have an iPhone. So, Justin and I are sorted. Now all you guys need to do is do yourself a huge favour by going out and purchasing yourself a gorgeous new iPhone, or, alternatively, you could wait for that magical 3G on everyone seems to be talking about.

So, shameless iPhone plug out of the way it's onto the video converter.
Is this thing the real deal? Well, it's not an official program, so expect the odd glitch or two, although I've not experienced one yet.
How well does it work? Very, very well. You have literally one setting to change, that's how good you want the output setting (the best of course), all you have to do other than this is drop the video file you want iPhoning and it works it's magic.
Is it fast? Not really, my computer has a pretty decent spec and handled it well, but still it took a long time, video recoding is probably the most process intensive thing you can do with your computer anyway, so this is expected.

I've pretty much had no problems with it, it doesn't want to encode like 2 of my video files for whatever reason, but other than that it recodes everything I've thrown at it. What AMAZED me was that it even recoded a 8GB (!) HD copy of Matrix Revolutions, from a format only very few programs I know of support, .mkv.

The program outputs files to the desktop by default, which I then just add to my iTunes and it's ready to sync to my iPhone, iTunes doesn't need to do anything else with it. Amazing.

Have some questions about the new iPhone set to launch any time now? Here all the unofficial info so far:

3G - What does this mean? It means faster internet when you're on the go. The iPhone uses AT&T's cellular network for internet access. The original iPhone used AT&T's older 2G network, and the new 3G iPhone will, of course, use AT&T's newer 3G network. Which means faster.
Front Camera - In the picture mock-up above, there is a camera lens on the upper right of the phone next to the speaker. The speculation is that along with the new iPhone software having iChat ( Apple's instant messaging program) it will also support video chat to other 3G iPhone users or even people using iChat on their Macs.
GPS - Most modern phones these days have some sort of GPS capabilities built in, but the iPhone is just begging for it. With it's amazing Google Maps functionality, GPS would be perfect for the iPhone. As the current iPhone stands now, it has sort of a pseudo GPS functionality where it guesstimates your approximate location with cell phone towers. It's a safe bet that true GPS will be in the 3G iPhone.
Case Redesign - 3rd party cell phone case maker XSKN has basically confirmed the new design of the 3G iPhone. Hell, you can even buy a case for the yet to be released iPhone on their website now! The picture below is straight from XSKN's website and clearly shows you the difference between the old and the new iPhone.
Storage Increase - When the iPhone first launched last year it came in 4GB and 8GB variety, today the two options are 8GB and 16GB. We know that 32GB can fit inside the iPod Touch, so it would only make sense that the 3G iPhone will see a memory boost as well. My bet, 16GB ($400) and 32GB ($500).
Rebates, Rebates, Rebates - When the iPhone first launched it was $600 dollars period. No discounts, no rebates, no promotions. In less than 60 days from the iPhone's launch date Apple dropped the iPhone's price to $400! Even though they gave (us) early adopters a $100 credit (genius on Apple's part) that's still quite a price drop in less than 3 months on a device that is selling like hot cakes. So this this around it looks like Apple is going the route of 99% of other cell phones and letting the cell companies subsidize the cost with rebates. So you could get your own 3G iPhone for the low price of $200, of course after you sign away your first born child to AT&T.

So be on the look out on June 9th for some "official" announcement on the 3G iPhone.

What's Wrong With GTA IV? Lets Start With These 10.

I love GTA as much as well, everyone, but there are a few flaws. Here's a great list of 10 of GTA's inperfections:

1. Money Has No Value

This is my biggest beef with GTA IV: money has little value. You go on a hundred missions to earn cash...for what? More ammo? A new pair of shoes? I have $750,000 in my bank account and I live in a shit-hole. All the clothes I can buy were purchased in the early stages of the game. So what am I supposed to do with all this money? This is the American Dream? Where did the option to purchase real-estate go? The whole game is based on making money but the designers forgot one key element: you need something to spend money on, else your money is worthless. $5 hamburgers and an optional freeway toll just don't amount to very much.

2. Multiplayer

Multiplayer in a GTA game is nothing new if you've played previous PC versions and downloaded certain mods, but this is the first time it's been officially included by Rockstar, so you'd think they'd do it right. Instead, multiplayer feels like an afterthought, sporting a level-up system that takes forever to advance in ranks, all so you can unlock a few items of clothing.

The Lobby system can take ages for a game to start, usually because all the stoners in the room forget to click Ready, or worse, bitch and moan about a specific game setting that usually leads to mutiny.

There's no shortage of multiplayer game modes, which is great in theory, but I'd gladly take two well-balanced game modes over a multitude of half-assed, poorly designed ideas that find the majority of players running around maps searching for a freaking car. It's called Grand Theft Auto, not Grand Theft Pedestrian.

A lot of the problems could easily be addressed by a Host who doesn't have his head up his ass, but most toggle settings that are detrimental to fun, usually forcing the majority of players to abandon a round in mid-stride out of sheer boredom. What GTA IV really needs are maps created specifically for multiplayer, something we'll undoubtedly be paying for in future DLC.

3. Ponderous Story

A lot of reviewers keep harping on the stellar, amazing, and unparalleled story, which makes me wonder if any of these guys actually watch movies or read books. The tale of Niko is nothing original, evidenced by hundreds of movies from the era of film noir, but what sets this apart from its cinematic cousins is the sheer ponderousness of the story. This is a plot that barely moves and keeps repeating itself over and over. As a character, Niko doesn't evolve and his actions have little impact on the game world, save for the ending, which is as empty as everything that preceded it.

The writers of GTA IV make a rookie mistake: they tell me, they don't show me. Telling me Niko is searching for his moral compass is of no use, especially when none of the elements manifest in terms of gameplay, save for a few rudimentary decisions that are no more than, "Kill Mr. X or Kill Mr. Y."

4. No Upwards Mobility

The majority of critics claim that GTA IV is about the American Dream, an ethereal concept that means something different for everyone. In the universe of GTA, the American Dream apparently entails moving from one pigsty apartment to another pigsty apartment, albeit in a slightly better part of town. There is zero sense of social advancement or self-sufficiency, and all the way till the end of the game you find yourself working as nothing more than slave-labor for those who are enjoying the American Dream.

5. A Step Back From Previous Versions

While the graphics engine is an amazing achievement and deserving of the highest praise, every other aspect of GTA IV has devolved. It's as if the designers put 95% of their effort into creating a believable environment and used the last 5% for gameplay. Instead of mini-games involving taxi fares, ice-cream trucks, pizza delivery, ambulance driving, fire-fighting, territorial control, managing a gang...you get a boring round of pool, bowling and darts.

6. Wonky Cover System

It's great that GTA IV now has a cover system. It's not so great that it makes me want to punch my Xbox in the face. God forbid you attempt the cover system near several objects as you never know where you'll get attached. I've lost track of how many times I've been in cover mode, only to have the game refuse to fire my weapon for some inexplicable reason, forcing me to uncover and recover. It's annoying, frustrating and lacks polish.

7. Dopey Mini-Games

Billiards, bowling and darts, eh? Three boring mini-games that have little to no impact on anything. You can't even bet an opponent for some cash, which I guess doesn't matter because money has no value anyway. The designers could have exercised a little creativity by developing a little pick-up basketball game at the park, or skeet shooting, or dirt-bike racing. Hell, I'll take a little Frisbee tossing or miniature golf. Something original, for Pete's sake.

8. Relationships Are Idiotic

One new aspect to GTA is the concept of relationships. Unfortunately, it's rudimentary at best, bordering on sublimely retarded. All you have to do is call someone on your phone, pick them up, and head wherever you need to go. Once there, you do nothing that has any impact. As long as you don't total your car or inadvertently shoot your date in the face, they all seem to love you. In the end, relationships in GTA stand as a concept that was never developed. The designers should have taken some notes from The Sims and offered the player tangible options based on the environment the characters find themselves in.

9. Clothing Interface

I made a terrible mistake in the early part of the game: I purchased every bit of clothing I could find. I didn't realize that the clothing interface, which hasn't changed from previous versions, would continue to be a monumental example of crappy design. There is no organization to the clothes, no quick way to select a suit or casual attire, forcing the player to view every single item one-by-one, an act that redefines tedium and borders on torture.

10. Phantom Traffic

I don't know what else to call this, so I'm sticking with Phantom Traffic. Phantom Traffic has been around ever since GTA went 3D and it continues to bug the hell out of me. What is it? It's when you look down a stretch of road and don't see any cars. You turn around, look down another stretch, and still don't see any cars. So you turn back to your original viewpoint and suddenly there's a freaking traffic-jam, cars everywhere. I was hoping the next-gen version of GTA would expand the distance cars appear, but such is not the case. Ultimately, this means it's pointless to look around and see if any cops are around before stealing a car, as the second you turn your attention to the window, you have no idea what has suddenly materialized behind you.

A New Case To Go With My New iPhone.

So I've had quite the adventure today with my iPhone, well the last few weeks have been interesting I should say. I've been having random intermittent problems with my iPhone over the last few weeks and even a trip to an Apple Genius didn't help, the first time. The phone was restarting, freezing, and sometimes unresponsive. Now I'm not going to blame all this solely on this being a bad phone, I have been know the drop my phone a few times and I'm sure that didn't help things out.

Today though the phone just decided to die, it just started constantly restarting itself until the battery went dead. So I went back to the Apple Store determined to get this phone fixed once and for all, and in typical Apple fashion their service was unmatched.

I explained my problems with my iPhone to the Genius, and after a bit of testing on his part he gave me a ~~refurbished~~ new iPhone. Simple as that. I've never had a retail experience that even comes close to the 'Apple Retail Experience", most customer service departments treat you like such a bother and a waste of their time. Just one more reason to buy only Apple products in my book.

I must admit that I'm a iPhone case snob, I could never find one that I liked. There are two main problems with most of the cases on the market: the first one is that you can't dock the iPhone with most cases on, which means you have to constantly take the cases on and off, and the second is that most cases are rubber and therefor they don't slide out of your pocket very well. But today I think I found a great solution to both of these problems.

I went with the Agent 18 Eco Shield for the iPhone for $29.95. This case is great because it solved both of my problems, the bottom half is detachable so I have a quick easy way to still use the dock, and it's made of a hard smooth plastic that slides in and out of my pockets with ease.

So here's what it looks like in the dock that comes with the iPhone, just make sure you keep the bottom piece close; you'd look pretty dumb with half of a case on your iPhone.

I also have a Universal iPod Dock and the whole case fits great if you just take out the little dock adapter piece.

Overall, I highly recommend this case. Even if I drop my phone and the case breaks, it's a lot cheaper to replace than my iPhone.

GTA IV Multiplayer: Just Like Single-Player But With Your Friends!

I just read a few articles over at IGN on their multiplayer take of GTA IV, and damn I can't wait. In every game mode you have all of Liberty City to run free in, no invisible walls, no doors that won't open, just free reign.

There is even a mode called "Free Mode" that alows for you and up to 15 of your closest friends to do whatever the hell you wanna do. Think of this mode as single-player minus the story, so you still have all the fun stuff, cops, pedestrians, guns, cars, helicopters, motorcycles, etc...
So what can you do in Free Mode, kill each other? Sure you could, but think about it as co-op in a way.

My favorite thing to do in a GTA game is all the ancillary stuff, jacking cars, driving around, shooting random people, running people over, getting a wanted level and running from the cops. Now wouldn't that be so much more fun if I could do that with a buddy? How about 4 buddies or 15?

The entire Joystiq Network put up a poll asking it's readers on which platform they will be grabbing GTA on. The results are a little surprising to me, I would have expected that more people would have picked the 360 over the PS3.

In my eyes there is no advantage in the PS3 version, unless you count the "free" PS Network functionality. But I'll pay $50 a year to have a much better on-line experience. Not to mention the 360 version has exclusive DLC and achievements to boot.

Look for GTA IV to hit the streets on April, 29th.

My 1st year of blogging about Milo is quickly coming to a close. On April 15th I will have blogged about Milo (almost) everyday for a year. On the 15th I plan on doing a recap of the year, with my favorite pictures and memories of the big guy. I searched the globe (well maybe just Best Buy and a bit of the internet) for some small, sexy, great sounding laptop speakers, and at first I could find any. All the ones I looked at were either 2.1 (with a sub) which I didn't want, or they were just too damn big. Even the Apple Store didn't have anything I wanted. Gasp!

So finally as I was leaving another failed attempt at Best Buy, I got a helpful (for once) salesmen who knew just was I was looking for. He pointed me to the Logitech V20 USB speakers, which are perfect for my needs. I don't need great speakers just something better than the built-in speakers on my MacBook. With these being USB powers makes them even more awesome, a fact I didn't even know till I got them out of the box! So no power cord to mess with, light weight, very portable, and sounds great. Just what I was looking for.

The Mac BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death)

I got this interesting little screen yesterday, it was an overlay on top of everything I was doing. I couldn't do anything; no mouse or keyboard input. The only thing left to due was follow the instructions, so I guess Mac's aren't perfect after all.

It's still better than the eye sore that is the Windows BSOD, unless you see one like this:

When I was trying to decided which Mac to buy, screen size was one of my main issues. MacBook's only have a 13" screen while the MacBook Pro's can have either a 15" or a 17" screen. In the end I decided that the regular MacBook would be just fine for me, and since I now have an unused 19" monitor laying around I thought I could put it to good use.

So when I have the MB hooked up at my desk, I've got almost a desktop scenario setup: wireless keyboard/mouse, and a separate monitor.

Anyone know how I can only use my external display?

Installing Windows on a Mac through Boot Camp has been out for around a year now, but that doesn't make it right. It just seems odd somehow, when you boot a Mac for the first time into Windows. The process was very strait forward (very Apple) and by far the best Windows installation experience I've ever had, and I've had a lot.

I have to still keep (grown) a Windows machine around so this is the perfect way to do it for me. Now I know, I could do Parallels or VMware Fusion but I like running everything natively. I have to say Windows runs fantastic on the Mac, which is no surprise given the spec's of the machine regardless if Apple made it or not.

If you use Google as much as I do, you may notice something just doesn't look right today. Google has changed their simple white page to black in honor of Earth Day. Being "Ricky Roll'd" is an internet prank that promises of some great video only to link you back to the 80's Rick Astley video, Never Gonna Let You Down. Now being from the 80's I don't find the song it self that annoying, but the dance moves? It just doesn't get better than that.

While I was at work at the hospital, the song came on over the PA and I couldn't help smile as I thought of those dance moves...

So as hard as it is to believe, people cheat and lie to gain something as useless as Gamer Points. Achievements are useful in tracking a friends progress in a game, or even for bragging rights but to hack to get 'em? Not worth it. Now Microsoft is taking action against this cheaters, what will happen you ask?

A LIVE player who obtained their gamerscore in this abnormal way will

Find their gamerscore reset to zero, and
Be unable to regain all previously earned achievements, and
Be labeled as a “cheater” for the community to view.

Blackout: Lockout's Evil Cousin.

Looks like all the internet rumors were true, Lockout is coming back to Halo.

A true fan favorite of the series, Lockout, was brought out of the cold and set in Bungie's first ever night-time multiplayer map.

From the pictures it's looks the same but I'm sure Bungie will have a few surprises in store for us.

So by definition I'm a Windows guy. I grew up with MS DOS, evolved to Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, ~~Windows ME~~, Windows XP, and finally Windows Vista. Hell, I even own my own computer business repairing/fixing Windows computers. So how did I end up with a Mac?

Steve Job's has a plan, and it's working.

The iPod was Steve's Trojan Horse into the Windows users hearts. They took something everybody likes (music) and applied the Apple formula to it: ease of use, beauty, simplicity. It gave Windows users just a taste of how Apple works, but some people still weren't convinced.

So Jobs took it to the next level and took a device that everyone uses and everyone hates... Their cell phone. Most people can't/don't use 80% of the "features" built into their cell phones, not to mention 'smart' phone users. Then comes along the iPhone, and it just made everything so easy, so Apple.

So with Apple's market share up and with Windows looking so tired and outdated, it's only a matter of time.

So now when people ask me, "What's a Mac", I tell them it's their next computer.

Sidewider Remake For Halo 3: Avalanche.

Bungie released some new details about the upcoming Lendary Map Pack that is set to XBL on April 15th for 800 MS points.

Out of the three maps that are set to be released we now know about two of them: Ghost Town and Avalanche.

Avalanche is a remake of the classic Halo map, Sidewinder. Sidewinder was fan favorite from back in the day, but saw little play time due to it's massive size. Unless you had a huge LAN party rockin' you couldn't get enough people to fill the map.

So be on the lookout for Bungie to give us the last piece of the Legendary Map Pack puzzle soon.
